The Pearl In Pagan

When we first launched in 2010, we were part of the pearl popping community - where you would purchased a farmed oyster from us, grown to have a pearl inside, and we would open the oyster on our live stream, and either mount the pearl on to jewellery of your choosing or place into a glass jar as a keep sake.

We are relaunching this, to stay true to who we are, the pearl part, is important to us, as it symbolised growth, nature, and female energy, and in some cultures it also represents rebirth.

You can also choose to open the oyster yourself at home, we can advise on how to safely do this.

The pearls come in a variety of colours, so each opening is unique (we do not know the colour inside either!!).

Farmed or cultured

Farmed, or cultured, pearls are real pearls grown in mussels or oysters with human intervention. The process involves manually introducing an irritant, such as a shell bead and mantle tissue, into the mollusc, which then secretes layers of nacre (mother-of-pearl) around the irritant to form the pearl

Cultured pearls

Cultured pearls are genuine pearls grown in molluscs with human assistance, where a farmer inserts an irritant (like a bead or tissue) to trigger nacre secretion, creating a pearl similar to a natural one but far more common and affordable. The process involves carefully implanting a nucleus and tissue, after which the mollusc coats it in layers of nacre over years, resulting in pearls like freshwater (from lakes/rivers, often solid), Akoya (Japan, round), Tahitian (dark colours), and South Sea (large, valuable). Over 95% of pearls on the market are cultured, offering beauty and uniqueness with varying shapes, sizes, and colours.
